Information and communications technologies (IT) can contribute to the economic, political, and social power of women, as well as to gender equality promotion. This potential will only be a reality if gender dimensions in social information –in terms of users' needs, access conditions, policies and applications, and regulations- are well understood and properly handled by everyone involved.

Statistics regarding women's presence in several knowledge areas in our country were recently published. It is easy to imagine that the presence of women in engineering areas, as well as in Physics, Math and Biological Sciences areas is less than in others. Figures showed that the University degrees with participation of professional women are: Transportation Engineering, Aeronautics, Naval and Aviators (2.4%), Extractive Engineering, Metallurgical and Energy Engineering (3.3%), and Electric and Electronics Engineering (4.6%). It is a regrettable fact, since the telecommunications segment plays and will play an important role in our country's development, and if figures regarding women continue showing the same trend, they will be consigning to oblivion.

Starting in this issue, we opened IT Women as a new space for women to express themselves. It is open for our instructors, students and for every professional woman in several areas, including the IT segment, the ones in charge of personnel recruitment and selection, researchers, and every woman in the technological area. We hope you enjoy this section.

This time we want to use this space to recognize the effort of some Academies which stand out for their commitment with their students, instructors and the entire community. We also want to welcome the new academies.

Conalep Tabasco. Commitment and dedication.

In February 2003, Conalep Tabasco joined the Cisco Networking Academy Program as Local Academy. In less than two years, thanks to its commitment this Academy becomes Regional Academy and they expect to have their first graduates' generation by the end of 2005.

Conalep Tabasco started as a public organization comprised of 6 locations. Each location teaches 15 professional technical degrees, under an integrated approach.

Its mission as Academy is to strengthen the use and knowledge of information technologies and to enable students and teachers to access them. Through certification, they also want to offer their students better job opportunities.

According to the Legal Main Contact, Rafael Gonzalo Álvarez, being an Academy enables the institution to achieve a competitive advantage, elevating its educational offering implementing new educational models which allow students to face future challenges.

For instructors this is a means for continuous education. Networking training benefited students in terms of certification which lead to better job opportunities.

However, one of Conalep's major challenges is certification. They consider this issue a very important matter for those enrolled in the Program. Their opinion is that not only knowledge is important, but also to culminate with certification.

This Institution is committed not only with their students and instructors, but with the state's rural marginal communities, and therefore they already launched the PAZM, Programa de Atención a Zonas Marginadas (Marginal Zones Care Program).

Through this program they are offering social training and community aid to people, productive organizations, municipal and local authorities found around each Conalep's location. This program trains students and teachers to use computer networks.

With the participation of Conalep's students and teachers, they expect to train over 881 students through their Local Academies. With these activities they are also benefiting the state as well as inviting other academies to share their knowledge with their communities, achieving mutual benefits.

Our student's opinion.
..

"When I share the knowledge and skills I acquired in the Cisco Networking Academy Academy, I realize I've chosen the right path. It is very satisfying being invited to install a network, just because I had CCNA knowledge. Now I want to achieve the certification, because I'm sure there is a big world out there waiting for me".
Jesús Alvidres Quijano.
Universidad Tecnológica de Tabasco.
Student.

"
When you graduate from a technological degree, it is very difficult to prove your hands-on performance. When you have the basics, your outlook is different; you have added value as a professional. This was a real challenge that helped me find out my real profession and passion".
Mauricio Loeza Cortes.
Universidad Tecnológica de Tabasco.
Student.

"
Thanks to the Cisco Networking Academy Program I've been able to use what I've learned. I'm in charge of the systems department, and without a question, I've been successful, result of the program's training".

“In May 2005 I got the CCNA and CCIA certifications. This achievement enabled me to cooperate assisting 4 generations to certificate. It is a major responsibility and satisfaction sharing with them the learning experience through Cisco's programs. The institution I work for is very interested in supporting the technological growth and development, and therefore starting this year, I'm in charge of the ITIC (Ingeniería Tecnologías de Información y Comunicaciones; Engineering in Information Technologies and Communications) degree, to continue shaping professionals who can contribute with new enterprise and working proposals".
Fabiola Díaz Nieto, Engineer, Instructor.
ITESM, Campus San Luis Potosí.

"I think technology is unlimited, and it can reach the most hidden and remote places; just like the way Cisco is getting there through its program. I fell favored and I am proud of having the opportunity to contribute with my knowledge in and outside the country, leaving behind the paradigm that technology isn't for everyone".
Lourdes Becerra Garcia, Student.
Instituto Tecnológico Superior Zacapoaxtla. Puebla.

Gender Initiative

An overview of the center of the country...

One of CATC's (Cisco Academy Training Center) recent activities was the visit to the Regional Academies in the central part of Mexico: Mexico: la Universidad Tecnológica de Nezahualcoyotl, Universidad Tecnológica de México, Universidad del Valle de México / Campus Lomas Verdes and Universidad del Valle de México / Campus Tlalpan, each embracing 10 Local Academies, and 100 students enrolled in different modules of the courses of the Cisco Netwoking Academy Program.

Our most important general impression of these successful monitoring visits was the fact that the above mentioned Academies are meeting the quality standards required by the Program, resulting in a wave of graduates who are already employed in IT areas. This success is due to the responsibility and commitment of instructors. It is worth to mention that one weakness is that the Academies are not spreading the benefits of certification. Therefore, we are using other strategies to promote among students the program's benefits and advantages.

The program is growing gradually, in new Universities as its success is being spread. In the CATC we will continue working together with Regional Academies to achieve a better development of this program that revolutionized the technological demand of our students.

Growing with quality is not a matter of luck but a great number of people working together. In this joint mission communication plays a very important role, and therefore we want you to express your point of view, which will be respected by our entire team. If you find something uncomfortable or wrong, that you think is violating the quality of the program in your institution, let us know; one of our goals is to get rid of these situations as soon as possible, and only with your help we will be able to do it. The Cisco Academy Training Center offers you two e-mail addresses for you to send us your comments: webmaster-espanol@cisco.netacad.net and catcmx@uat.edu.mx. We are sure we will count on you. Our best regards.

CCNA Classes: Instructors' and students Frequently Asked Questions.

  • What do I need to teach CCNA?
Only users with Instructor status are able to open classes for students. They must have passed the Orientation Course as well as the CCNA instructor courses.
  • My instructor is not able to enroll me in the class, as I do not appear to be eligible. What can I do about it?
Probably your status is denied inside Academy Connection. Your instructor should contact Help Desk to request your account to be re-activated to be eligible again.

Another possible cause might be that you appear as incomplete user in the roaster. If this is the case, your instructor needs to add you from the section “Enroll Incomplete Students”.

  • I am an instructor and I can not open a new version 3.1 class.
Please check with your Academy's Legal Main Contact or Curriculum Lead; it is possible that the CCNA v3.1 courses in Spanish are not active yet for your Institution. They are the only ones who can activate this curriculum from the “Enable/Edit Course Offerings.
    See tutorial: http://cisco.netacad.net/cnams/content/tools/training/AM060/AM060.html
  • I am an Instructor and I am registering a student for the CCNA 2 v3.1 class in Spanish. However, in the roaster the option Continue does not appear, and he already took several exams in CCNA 2. What can I do?
If the student comes from a CCNA 2.1.2 class and he was marked as incomplete, and now you are trying to enroll him in a CCNA 3.1 class, you will not be able to mark him as Continue, you will have to select the option Retake and have him start the class from the beginning.
    See tutorial: http://cisco.netacad.net/cnams/content/tools/training/018/018.html
    .
  • I am an Instructor and I just found out that the new CCNA 3.1 classes includes two exam vouchers, in modules 2 and 4. Is it necessary to activate these tests for students?
Students can take their Certification exam in two sessions. They have to take two exams, one in modules 2 and the other one in module 4. If they fulfill the requirements, they can get the voucher for the INTRO and ICND exams. Otherwise, instructors can skip the activation of module's 2 voucher. However, if the user wants to use the voucher to take the complete exam, instructors need to activate module's 4 voucher exam. In either case, to be eligible for a voucher, students must also meet the regular requirements.
